Dragon Champions is another fantasy themed online slot game by software developer Playtech, and in the tradition of any good fantasy game, warriors, magic and dragons are all in one place. Let’s not forget the mounds of gold and treasure that you can see in the backdrop, after all, why feature a dragon if it isn’t going to protect something valuable. Speaking of which, the dragon symbol is the most lucrative on these reels, offering payouts of up to 400 coins, and better yet, it can appear in full reel stacks. The quality of the graphics in Dragon Champions is decent, even though it’s not 3D or HD and doesn’t have anything fancy to boast about in the way of animations.
This brings us to the game’s layout, which features a larger grid than what you usually find in online slot games. You will be looking at a total of 6 reels and 4 rows and these come with a whopping 4096 ways to win. Of course this implies that there will be no room for adjusting paylines. So, with that in mind, you have a decent but not too flexible betting range to work with. It starts off at a minimum stake of 40p per single spin and the maximum amount you will be able to wager will set you back a total of £80 per spin.
Dragon Champions has two main special features in store for its players and one of them is the Dragonfire Feature. As a result of it, any symbol on the reels (save for the Wild and Scatter) can appear with a blue flame burning around it, and if that symbol can potentially improve or create a winning combo by expanding it will do so. More specifically, the symbol can expand in four directions: up, down and to the sides. This is a random feature that can take place only during the base game.
The game’s logo acts as the Wild, and as such, it has the capacity to replace any of the regular symbols to help form winning combinations. However, it will not substitute for the Scatter icon. In addition, the Wild can land in just about any position on the reels. Just keep in mind that it will not have the ability to offer you any payouts of its own.
The biggest attraction (and potentially the most rewarding one, too) is the Freespins Feature. To trigger it you will be looking to land a minimum of 3 Scatter symbols anywhere in view during the same spin. This will award you the minimum amount of 8 freespins, but you can count on larger amounts if you manage to activate the bonus round with more Scatter symbols.
If you landed 4 Scatters you can receive a total of 15 freespins; 5 Scatter symbols, on the other hand, will award you a total of 25 freespins; and last but most certainly not least, you can count on a major 100 freespins if you land 6 Scatters at the same time.
In addition, during the bonus, all Dragonfire symbols will turn into Dragons, awarding larger cash prizes, and you can even retrigger the feature to gain more freespins. You can do so by landing only 2 Scatter icons at a time. These will reward you with a humble 5 extra freespins, but more Scatters will give you more freespins as per the same rules that initially trigger the Freespins Round.
Dragon Champions is fairly simplistic in terms of its setup. The Dragonfire Feature makes for a very nice touch, but it’s definitely overshadowed by the immensely generous Freespins Bonus. However, the game’s extreme volatility will make it challenging to actually trigger the feature, so be sure to stock up on some patience.
