Gladiator Road to Rome is a new and improved version of Playtech’s original Gladiator online slot game. In fact, this is one of this provider’s latest releases and it looks and feels as awesome as you’d expect it to. The quality of the graphics is truly superb and surpasses even that of the original title; but just like it’s earlier incarnation, this offering is based on the 2000 motion picture starring Russel Crowe. Furthermore, you will still get to see some of your favorite characters from the movie on the reels. These include Proximo, Lucilla, Tigris of Gaul and Commodus. As for the lower value symbols, these feature the simple playing card icons from Ace to 9.

Now that that is all out of the way, let’s have a closer look at the layout of this game. Gladiator Road to Rome features a standard grid of 5 reels and 3 rows and comes with an agreeable number of paylines – 25. These are fixed and therefore players will not have the possibility to adjust them in any way which reflects on the betting range accordingly. The minimum bet here will set you back some 25p per single spin and the maximum bet is a total of £125 per spin.

Special Features

Gladiator Wild

The cool thing about the Wild symbol in this title is that it’s not present indefinitely. Wilds only appear when there is a fully stacked Gladiator symbol. When this happens the Gladiator will turn into a Wild and then do its job, which is to substitute for any of the other symbols and help create winning combinations. The great thing about this is that you will automatically have a fully Wild reel.

In addition, Gladiator symbols are the most lucrative in this offering, and they can appear on any of the reels. Just keep in mind that the Wild will not be able to substitute for the Scatter or Bonus symbols.

Helmet Bonus

Much like the original title, Gladiator Road to Rome boasts two whole bonus games. One of them is the Gladiator Bonus which you can trigger by landing 3 Bonus symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4. This feature is identical to its counterpart in the first game. This means that you will see a total of 9 different helmets award you a cash prize based on the metal they’re made of. The possibilities are gold, silver and bronze. The only difference is that if you land all 9 gold helmets you will win the progressive jackpot.

Weapon Scatter

Look out for the Scatter symbol, as it too can trigger a bonus feature. More specifically, with its help you will be able to activate the game’s Freespins Feature, but you will have to land at least 3 Scatter symbols simultaneously to do this. Once you do, you will receive a number of freespins that reflect the number of triggering symbols you managed to land. Thus, 3, 4 or 5 Scatters will award you 5, 8 or 12 freespins, respectively.

Before the freespins can begin you will enter a new screen with a grid of 12 shields before you. You will have to select three of them to reveal certain extras for your bonus round. These can include extra freespins, multipliers, or extra Wild symbols, and furthermore, you can also benefit from a Symbol Payout Boost which will increase the payouts of a random symbol x5. Then there’s also the possibility of uncovering a symbol that will pay as a Scatter, and last but not least, you can uncover the Gladiator Wild Nudge. This will make sure that whenever you partially land a Gladiator on the reels it will be nudged to fully cover that reel.

Verdict

Gladiator: Road to Rome is without doubt an improvement on the very popular original, and it’s not simply because the visuals are of better quality – you will have better winning opportunities, too, and sacrifice none of the fun.
