For a truly dreamy and almost fairytale-like gaming experience, check out Butterfly Staxx by software developer Netent. The animated backdrop takes players to a serene and magical place, with mountains and a small river and a tree standing beside the reels sprouting purple blossoms. In addition, we really like the outlandish soundtrack which wonderfully compliments the theme; and let’s not forget the exquisite 3D graphics that really make the colorful flowers on the reels pop out of the screen.
As far as the layout goes, it features a slightly taller than the usual grid of 5 reels and 4 rows. There are 40 paylines in total, and as is often the case with Netent offerings, they are fixed. Hence, stakes are also a bit on the steeper side starting at a minimum bet of 40p per spin. There are eight regular symbols on the reels, four of which are the lower value playing card icons, and the remaining four include three different colored flowers and a glowing butterfly. The latter is also the game’s most lucrative symbol with payouts of up to 60 coins, and it can also appear in stacks which you will learn is essential for one of the game’s special features.
As we pointed out, the butterfly symbol on these reels can appear fully stacked during spins. This can activate the Re-spins feature assuming the butterfly stack covers an entire reel. As a result of this, the butterflies will fly over to the leftmost reel, after which a re-spin will occur, then, if other butterfly symbols happen to land on the reels they will also move over to the leftmost reel that doesn’t have a butterfly in the same row. Likewise, this will trigger a subsequent re-spin, and these re-spins will continue until no more butterflies land on the reels.
Butterfly Staxx also comes with its very own Wild symbol, which can appear in any position on the reels. More importantly, however, it will replace any of the other symbols on the reels to create winning lines. The one exception to this rule is the Scatter symbol, and in addition, the Wild doesn’t offer any payouts of its own.
The only other special symbol is the Scatter symbol, and much like its Wild counterpart, it doesn’t offer any payouts of its own. Furthermore, it can also land just about anywhere on the reels. In order for you to benefit from it you will need to land at least 3 Scatters at the same time, and this will trigger the Butterfly Spins feature, awarding you the minimum of 5 Butterfly Spins. Landing 4 or 5 Scatters, on the other hand, will grant you 6 and 7 Butterfly Spins, respectively.
During these free spins you will see that only Cocoon symbols can land on the screen. What’s more, they come in two types: active and dormant. The active ones will turn into butterflies as soon as they land on the reels. Then, these butterfly symbols will fly to the left, just like in the Re-spin feature. They will remain there until the end of the bonus round. Needless to say, there is no way to retrigger this bonus round.
As you may have already gathered, Butterfly Staxx is a low variance title offering rather small prizes. But you will get to enjoy them pretty frequently throughout gameplay. That said, we should mention that this is a very easy-going and laid back title, so if you’re looking for a Zen kind of slot game with outstanding visuals, this would be it.
