The Phantom of the Opera is perhaps one of the most enchanting and romantically dark stories in musical history. It’s a popular work of art that has inspired quite a few developers to create slot games in its honour, and software developing giant Netent is no exception. Hence, the release of Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse, which offers superb quality graphics and a thrilling gaming experience. Not to mention that it includes a lovely soundtrack, which further enhances the vibe. Players will find themselves in the magnificent empty opera house, and floating in mid-air are the transparent reels with exquisite symbols on them. There’s a knife, rose, a handheld mirror, a large ruby ring, as well as the two character symbols.

You will notice the layout is a bit taller than what you normally see. It features a grid of 5 reels and 4 rows as opposed to the more common 3, and with them are a total of 40 paylines for you to place your bets on. However, as this is a Netent offering, you won’t be able to regulate the paylines. Not that you will really need to, considering that stakes start at a fair 20p per single spin, and the maximum wager will set players back a total of £200 per spin.

Special Features

Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse comes with several special features, and two of them will require you to land combinations of different symbols in order to trigger.

Masked Phantom Respin

One feature is the Masked Phantom Respin feature, and to activate it, you will need to land a stacked unmasked phantom symbol on reel 1 which takes up 2 positions on the reels. At the same time you will also need to land a Stacked Wild mask on the fifth reel.

As a result, this will trigger a respin with all special symbols held in place and acting as Wilds.

Point and Click Bonus

This is the second bonus round that you will need to trigger with the help of not one but two symbols. To activate it, you will need to land the stacked unmasked phantom on reel 1 again, and simultaneously, you will also need to land the stacked Christine on reel 5. As a result, you will enter a new screen with the pick me game.

The game has two stages, the first of which will require you to choose from eight roses. You will continue picking and revealing cash prizes until you come across the blocker. This will propel you to stage 2 of the pick-me feature, and here you will find yourself before 3 mirrors. Select one to reveal a multiplier of up to 3x which will be applied to the cash prize you accumulated in the previous stage.

Wild

The Wild symbol can land in any position on the reels at any point during gameplay, and as is its duty, it will be able to substitute for the regular symbols to help form winning sequences.

There are, however, two symbols that the Wild will not be able to replace and these are the Scatter and Bonus icons.

Freespins

Last but not least, what good slot game doesn’t have a freespins bonus? To trigger the freespins in Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse, look out for the Scatter symbol on reels 1, 3, and 5. Landing all 3 Scatters during the same spin will send you to a new set of reels and will award you an unlimited number of freespins.

But that’s not all. Whenever you land a masked phantom on any reel, that reel will become highlighted. What’s more, that very same masked phantom can appear fully stacked on highlighted reels. Oh, and it’s also Wild for the duration of the freespins round. Once you have highlighted all five of the reels, the bonus feature will end.
