Few are unaware of the iconic motion picture Gladiator directed by the renowned Ridley Scott, and be honest, we’ve all muttered the famous “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius…” speech haven’t we? Well Playtech has released a title that is based on the famous movie and it is, in fact, also its namesake.

You will get to see all of its most prominent characters on the reels of the game, too, including Proximo, Juba, Gracchus, the beautiful Lucilla, and the hated Commodus. Ironically, Commodus actually happens to be the highest paying symbol on the reels, offering payouts of up to 5,000 coins. In the backdrop you can see the outlines of the arena where some of the most dramatic scenes took place, and although not featuring the original soundtrack, there is some pretty great music to accompany gameplay here.

You will notice that the layout boasts 5 reels, 3 rows, and 25 paylines. This is pretty much what you see in most video slots these days, although the paylines are not fixed, which means that you can regulate them as per your own preferences. This affects the betting range in the favor of penny players, as the minimum bet is only 1p per spin. The maximum amount you will be able to wager is a lofty £1,250 per spin.

Special Features

One of the two main special features in Gladiator is the Gladiator Bonus Game. You can trigger it by landing all three Bonus symbols on the middle reels 2, 3 and 4. Once you do, the game will one by one present you with 9 gold, silver, and/or bronze helmets. Each helmet comes with a certain cash prize, all of which will add up in the end. After this, a small sequence will play out from the original motion picture.

Wild – The Bonus symbol also happens to be the game’s Wild symbol, and as you’ve already gathered it can only land on the three middle reels. In addition, it will be able to substitute for all other symbols save for the game’s Scatter icon, thus it can help boost your winnings. But keep in mind that the Wild doesn’t offer any payouts of its own.

Coliseum Bonus

The most attractive feature of this title is called the Coliseum Bonus, and you can trigger it by landing 3, 4, or 5 Scatter symbols anywhere in view during a spin. As a result, you will enter the armory and there will be a grid of 5 by 4 stones for you to choose from. Each row of stones will offer different types of prizes. For example, the bottom row provides freespins, whereas the one right above it will give you multipliers. Then the two top rows each offer extra Scatters and extra Wilds.

You will begin with the bottom row first and gradually make your way up to the top. Additional options among your picks include ‘Pick again’, which offers you another pick from that same row, and then there’s also ‘Collect’ which will cut your picks short and you will leave the feature with what you had gathered up until that point. Next, another short scene from the movie will follow before you can actually start with the freespins. While you cannot retrigger this feature, you will have the opportunity to gain more freespins. Namely, if you land Commodus on reel 3 during the bonus round, you can get another 3 extra freespins.

Gladiator is a magnificent offering with high quality visuals and a theme that will speak to most any movie buff out there. There are great winning opportunities too with some interesting features that break the mold when it comes to how they work. It may take a while before you actually trigger the bonuses, but it can be well worth the wait.
