A quick look at the logo for this game makes it clear where Rival Gaming got their inspiration from. After all, how many Victorian detectives do we really know of other than Sherlock Holmes? Of course, in this game, he isn’t known as Sherlock, instead, Rival has given him the name of “The Inspector”. The real question though, is how well does it play out when you access it?

Fortunately, the gameplay itself is smooth and interesting. The layout is a standard five reels and three rows, with 15 customisable pay lines alongside. You’re also able to adjust the bet that you have in play, first by choosing a coin value between 1p and £1. Afterwards, you can select the number of coins that you’d like to have in play per line between one and five. This means that Moonlight Mystery features a maximum bet possibility of £75 per spin.

While the slot doesn’t have much of a background to speak of, the graphics are pretty good in general. All of the standard symbols are characters from the theme’s story, starting with The Butler and The Maid. Then comes Lady Dunnit and her husband Col. Dunnit, who can provide maximum rewards of 100x your stake. The Professor comes next, while The Constable is also visible. The Doctor can also be found, but it’s The Inspector who operates as the highest paying standard addition. He can reward you with maximum pay-outs of 1,000x your wager.

Special Features

Bonus

It appears as though the policeman, doctor, and inspector need to look into a mysterious murder, as there’s a body outline symbol that appears on the reels. This one works as the game’s bonus symbol, allowing you to potentially play through the bonus round.

To do this, you need to ensure that at least three of the body outline symbol come into view in any position on the reels. This will activate the Who Dunnit Bonus Round, where you need to try and figure out who committed the crime to earn rewards.

Lantern

In Victorian England, the lantern was used to light up the darkness, and the lantern symbol will activate the free spins round of this game. You’ll need to spin three or more of them into view to get started, and once activated, you’ll be given 10 spins to play through.

During this round, if you form winning combinations with a wild symbol then a multiplier will also be added to your pay-out. A single wild will double it, two wilds will treble it, and three wilds will quadruple it. What’s more, this one becomes an expanding wild during free spins, so it can help you with forming multiple wins on each spin.

Poison

Speaking of the game’s wild symbol, this one is present in the form of the bottle of poison. Should this one appear on the reels, it will count as any of the other standard non-scatter symbols. Therefore, it can be very helpful when it comes to forming winning combinations.

During base gameplay, wins are multiplied by the number of wilds that contribute towards a combination.

Magnifying Glass

The last feature of Moonlight Mystery is its jackpot symbol, which is visible in the form of the magnifying glass. The Inspector needs this to search for clues, but if you spin it into two or more locations on the reels, you’ll receive a pay-out from it.

Spin five of them into view anywhere and you’ll see your bet be multiplied by 2,000x over. Now that’s quite the jackpot to walk away with!

Verdict

Moonlight Mystery may take its theme from that well-known and loved character of Sherlock Holmes, but even as a rip off, it works very well with a sort of murder mystery evening element to it. Rival Gaming has included some strong cartoon style graphics into the game, and the addition of various special features make it all the more appealing. Overall, it’s a good game from this developer’s collection.
